Mercy Relief (MR) has obtained the fundraising permit from the Commissioner of Charities (Permit no: 0002/2009) to raise funds in support of the international humanitarian community’s relief efforts in and around Gaza. The permit will run for one month from 10 January - 9 February 2009.

It has always been MR’s modus operandi to personally deliver or oversee the delivery of aid to affected areas. This current case is no different.

MR has been communicating directly with the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to consult and explore the most effective form of support that MR can provide. Both UN agencies welcomed MR’s offer of support and have agreed to receive and facilitate the delivery of MR’s donations and relief supplies to the affected locations within Gaza.

This is not the first time that MR is working with the UN agencies. It has worked closely with UN agencies such as UN OCHA, UNDP, WHO, Unicef, WFP and IOM in Aceh tsunami, Nias earthquake, Muzaffarabad earthquake and cyclone Nargis in Myanmar.

MR understands from UNRWA that the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip will resume as soon as possible. The announcement came after UNRWA received assurances from Israeli officials that attacks on UN schools and vehicles would not continue. UNRWA, which had been delivering food to up to a million Gazans during past 8 months of Israeli blockade, suspended its operations in the region last Thursday after one of its truck drivers was killed in an Israeli strike on an aid convoy.

This will not be MR’s first assistance to Palestine. It previously worked with the El Wafa hospital in Gaza in 2003, providing an ambulance and medical supplies worth SGD 383,000.

"It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Islam began as something strange and will revert to being strange as it began, so give glad tidings to the strangers.”"
