"SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!"
Saw Jerry Mcguire's movie few nights ago & the above statement stuck onto my mind till today...
Do you think that you are worth with what you are paid for???
Are you happy with your monthly salary??? Is it enough to cover all your expenses??? Can you save some???
Do you ask for more from your employee if you reckoned that you do deserve more???
How can we check if we are getting paid with the right (approximately) salary against your qualification +/- experiences??? Any website links??? Is it true that it is much more difficult to get a permanent jobs nowadays???
Please share with me your views & experiences on this issue. I like to look for a job soonish but I don't know what to look for... Is salary more important than other benefits or sacrifices that I have to make???

I'm more incline to associate "SHOW ME THE MONEY" with the movie, Austin Powers. Thats becos I demand my dosh from the laki in the same mean-spirited way as Dr Evil. Show me the money....or else no dinner for you. Show me the money...or else no sex ;D. I'm a housewife, you see. And a cunning, tyrannical one at that.
Once upon a bloody time ago, when I had the willpower to rise early from bed....and HAD A JOB, I would often felt severely underpaid. I've had on many ocassions came close to going down on my knees begging for pay increment from
the higher forces that rule
(translate : the shitty bosses sitting on the $3000 Bosch leather chairs). But I was never successful at the negotiation table. So I would quit and go from job to job like the way Casanova would go from lover to lover hoping to find THE ONE.
You know what? It doesn't work. Becos when you keep jumping from one organisation to another, you'll never work your way to the top (in the same way that Casanova never find true love). I was forever stuck in middle management level and never got my darn Bosch chair. You know you have NOT arrived when your seat in the office is still PVC or polyester fabric and you still have to trot to the printer room on your cheapo Charles n Keith slings to pick up your own printed papers, instead of having your own latest version multi-function printer/copier/scanner on your desk.
And one more thing - you gotta have a face that fits if you really want to climb all the way to the top in Singapore. And most of the time, it means you got to be a little yellow, slanty-eyed and spew Mandarin out of the mouth ;).

shaz, u really have enlightened me with ur views. ;) all of them ....
me having the same thoughts too and i have been there (being like a casonova) & bugs bunny hopping here & there.
however, i didnt realise when & why & how i have suddenly stopped hopping & now settling this company longer than i never been b4.
i have endured all the spit & spat of office politics, underpaid, underestimated, demoralised & all that while working.
stea_dy, just ask yourself what u want in a job or what u have for job. when u decided, try to find that job. if u find it, get shortlisted. if u work hard u will be at where u want to be. i guess......

I'm looking for any job related to oil & gas industry (preferable), don't mind on contract. I want to know if there's a guideline to what you supposedly get paid working in Singapore.

I thought this was over. It's sad but true, eh?
I'm worried to start work again. Don't know what to expect, I guess just have to terjun botol aje... My parents do have high expectations on me. It does bother me a bit & sometimes, I'm mad with them.... berbelah-bagi, you know what I mean...

Alhamdulillah.. happy for now.
Enough to cover my expenses (cos I'm quite a thrifty person). My belief.. "money can never be enough unless u manage it well" - millionaire also can be bankrupt if they don't manage it well.
Yes, I save every month for emergency or use it for our annual vacation.

Yes. Recently I ask them for more.. more knowledge. So, I was enrolled with an overseas institute to learn more about the tanker chartering industry. Concurrently I am also being sent for short courses to understudy some operational software and conduct internal training for other colleagues requiring it.

Donno where to check - sorry. I don't like to do such research as it can make me depress and feel unfairly treated. This statement is so true....

Oil & gas industry is big. Which division? Administration, Engineering, Trading, operation, etc? I was formerly from an Oil & Gas industry (Engineering) but now have moved on to petrochemicals (Trading).

Hey, I like to job-hop.. as long as I don't stay in the company too short a time lah. Usually, if the company unable to offer me a fresh assignment or challeges after 3-years, I would pack up & go..
I don't really like the idea that a person should remain doing the same job for too long - say 10yrs or so. I believe one can be stuck with the old and mundane routine and will have hard time catching up with the ever evolving technology and procedures. In a new place, you'll get new challenges and learnt new things - cos different company have different style of doing things uses different softwares. It is ok to remain with the same company as long as a person wish to be as long as they provide u with new challenges and new skills - just don't rot in your seat!
This is just my personal point of view ;)

This is really good..... I heard a lot of people are gearing to better themselves in short courses, degree courses, MBA, etc.... very encouraging.

Pipelines, oil rigs - any structures that corrode - is my speciality. I do coatings, HVOF (high velocity oxy fuel) thermally sprayed coatings.
Before, I was into airplanes. My passion was designing fighter planes... But, I'm so against war so no fighter planes or warfares for me... I refused to speak to my friends who are now working designing warheads.. :'(
I've tried Petronas but they didn't want me... Very lame excuses given...

Cool!!!! Will you ask for more $$$?
In my present company, I don't have to ask.. they are good at rewarding me fairly so far ;) Dulu when i work for a local company, local boss (the owner) I do ask for more - especially when I work 2-yrs without any increment while he can jolly well buy a 3-storey by CASH and change into bigger car!
But of course, all sort of rubbish reason would appear. Still, I know my worth and I know I am a sincere and honest worker. I started searching for new job and after several months finally accepted an offer.
The day I hand in my resignation, baru lah my boss counter offer me with all sorts of monetary rewards. Even bought me a gold bracelet! But too bad, I've given my word to the other party and I honor it.
Local bosses are not really bad. They are just selfish most of the time!

Comes down to y we wanna work.
If its for $$$, we can always earn more elsewhere - jadi tauke nasi ayam pon bleh kaya per...
If its for reputation, kena build from scratch, doesnt matter if we start at McDoner...
If its for the love of working, do we really count the every $$$ we bring home?
If its just purely to spend... anything will do arh!

Oil and gas - ha! thats a classic example of an industry that will prosper you the longer you stay with them. One of my best buddy is with Shell Singapore. He was offered a measly $1300 (poly grad) when he first took on the job in accounts about 10 years ago. But what he didn't know when he accepted the offer was that the oil industry dole out among the biggest bonus packet. You can expect 6 to 10 months bonus on average. And if there's war and oil prices shoot up....your bonus shoots up even more. 10 years later, my buddy is earning about a little above $3000 now. But with their 6 to 10 months bonus, its quite a high sum. But he did say the problem with Shell is that its almost next to impossible to rise to senior management (who earns $30 000/month) becos they reserve those places exclusively for the white guys. And everytime a position opens up for 1 training management position, they get at least 1000 applicants. They sieve through the first round of applicants simply by just looking at top academic grades..with 1st class honours being their first criteria.
I've done a congress/conference with the oil industry folks from all over the world. If you're looking into Malaysia, the crazy thing about them is that I recall their top guys always seem to be some kind of datuk, related to some menteri or kerabat diraja or some seriously crazily rich people. I don't want to squeal CRONYISM, but...... :-X.

Oh, I forgot to add....Calgary and Alberta (Canada) are looking for a lot of people/immigrants to come to their province since their oil discovery. Its a hotspot for immigrants now and economists are predicting Canada's wealth will start to shift from Vancouver and Ontario to these oil provinces. And for people like you with a lot of education and interested in the oil industry...voila! isn't that perfect?

I heard abt Calgary & Alberta... If possible, I prefer to work in Singapore cuz of my parents... but, it depends on the $, that's why I asked abt this. Bukan nak menyombong but it costs a lot to study regardless what plus I don't speak Mandarin and I am just some kind of hippy who can't even dress up (like other ladies in nice clothes & heels).. I can look out of Singapore (will have not much problems) but then I will have to be apart with my parents again... It's hard..
(I'm not the youngest or the favourite amongst my siblings & my parents don't really pay for my education (my dad dah lama retire & my mom is a h'wife & had 3 open heart surgeries in her life). I just love my parents to bits for having faith & trust in me!)
I found this online
http://www.kellyservices.com.sg/web/sg/services/en/pages/business_services_main.html
(sorry couldn't seem to find how to attach this, hope it's ok). It gives you an overall picture of the salary in singapore for 2006 (it's helpful for those seeking for jobs, too). I like to find more on related field to what I want to do... Plus, it will be nice to hear others' opinions on their chosen careers...

... Will be cool, I believe... ;D ;D ;D
