Hi sajna:

Since bujang blom tanya2.. I ask first, can?

PGDE courses usually start in July, right? So if one is to apply say in Jan/Feb, what happens in the meantime before the July enrolment begins?

Also, are all from the PDGE courses send to Secondary Schools after 'graduation' or they can still choose to teach in Primary Schools?

TIA! *smiles*

There are 2 types of PGDE..

1) general
2) PE

For those in the General specialisation, it will last for a year.

Whereas those in the PE specialisation , it will last for 2 years.

There are 2 intakes each year. Jan and July.

So if you didnt get into the Jan intake, you will have to do contract teaching while waiting for the July intake. Vice versa.

The levels, subjects, schools are all up to MOE. We have to accept them according to the number of vacancies of teachers teaching in those subjects. Usually, they will inform you of which level( PRI/ SEC) ,subjects you will be teaching before you embark on your studies. Upon graduation , you will be posted to any schools where there are any vacancies.

for example:  I have a friend who specialised in Science, Maths in uni She got some IT technical subject  ( cant remember it )

For more information , do check out

http://www.nie.edu.sg/html/itt_pgde.htm

kalau tersilap info, harap maaf, this is all that i know of.

All the best!!  Grin

Hi Flora:

Thanks for your reply. Oh ya.. by PE, do you mean Phys Ed?

And how's the pay structure like under contract teaching? Would we have already signed the bond when we take up the contract teaching? How long is the service bond?

yes dear,PE is physical education..

for more info about the rough salary and the pgde info, can refer to the following :  www.moe.gov.sg/teach/index.htm

You will only be required to sign up for the bond upon completion of your contract teaching, which is based on your principal;s recommendation and work performance throughout your contract teaching.

Bond will be 3 years for a year PGDE..not sure for the PE PGDE..

Hope this helps Smiley

Bagi ana, it would be better to have went through the contract teaching and you will have a "feel" of the career path before you sign the bond. Each and everyone has different experiences. BTW, I didn't have contract teaching experience.

Maybe you can try asking more specific question. Smiley

Must agree with sajn has said, its best that you try out contract teaching, jangan terus jump into it, At least you have some teaching experiences which you can relate to when you are going through the programme and be mentally prepared about what to expect in the teaching line.. But do not assume that it would be the same upon graduation. Its more challenging and can be demanding( varies from schools to school ?? )

I did relief teaching in a secondary school and were sent to primary school upon graduation. Yes, they are really different since you are teaching a different group of students. One as young adults whom you can relate and reason with and the other small kids who need very basic and detailed explanation just to understand a simple concept.

So what kind of difficulties I faced at the beginning was how to discipline in a boys school since Im used to teaching in a mixed school. Memang luar biasa, but gradually I learnt a lot from the seniors. The different way of disciplining students also varies too.

Another is the workload. Some schools will throw you a different kind of responsibilites on you when you first enter that you cannot breathe at all while others will be kind enough to add on to the workload gradually along the way. I guess you just need to be positive about it. Take them with stride.

Be nice, humble and friendly to your colleagues. And do not be shy or afraid to ask for help from your seniors. They are more than happy to guide you. Anyway, we are learning from each other too.

Some parents can be so cekik darah and demanding, others are super nice, accomodating and understanding. Thats part and parcel of teaching lifelah..

So what I feel is that when we embark into this teaching profession , it must come from the heart, interest, passion, etc. then you will enjoy the moments of it. Otherwise, at the end of the day, not only will we drag ourselves when clearing the bond, but may also kill the students interest of learning and being in school. Kids can also bring miracles and smiles to our lives sometimes... Smiley most of the time, the rewards that you reap at the end of the day exceeds the monetary benefits that you get each month  ( this is what I feel lah )

hope i have answered your questions? We learn along the way and dont put too much hope and pressure on yourselves and expect us to be perfect teachers when we first come in.

heheh so sorry kalau terside track sikit..

all the best!

This part I sokong 100%. Coming from a secondary school full of brats (not all of them are, but a few is enough to make life miserable), where students know not what is respect and self-motivation, at the end of the day, the best joy happens on 12th of each month. Until someone comes along and rob you of that joy by giving you an extra load of work. Some new initiatives.. hehehhe

Let's name some........... I&E, SEM, NE, IT, TS, CIP, EAGLE awards, School excellence awards, School distinction award... errmm what else did i miss? I am not going to explain arr.. apa all this abbreviations. But all these are going on in schools, other than teaching. Smiley

But it isn't all bad.... like what flora said.. you must have the passion. And it is nice when you get into a school that gives staff support (which is rare)   .

please.... don't quote me on these things. this are my personal views and opinions based on my very limited experience. AKU DAH HABIS BOND!!!

Yeah, I've already called and they said that the next intake would be in July. Latest I should apply to be in this intake would be April.

I also read on the webbie that if I were to apply say now, they would send me to schools for relief teaching first before joining NIE in July.

But say I were to apply end Jan, roughly how soon can I know if I have been shortlisted? Is it gonna take like 2 weeks or they would only contact me in April some sort?
